Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well, I'm sorta new at officially beta-reading things, but I've had a fair bit of experience outside of FF with editing other people's work. I might get kind of harsh on you if your handling of the English language is truly atrocious, or if I think you're not trying and are wasting my time, but other than that I'm pretty easygoing. However, if you really don't want honest criticism (and trust me, I'll give it), don't apply. I'm not going to be nasty, but I really don't want to see you not putting an effort into your writing.Other than that, go ahead and read my info. IF by some miracle of fate you happen to like my style, and IF you think you can deal with all the nonsense outlined below, then by all means notify me and we'll work something out. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am, and have always been, an absolute spelling/grammar freak. I am not afraid to absolutely go to town on you if I see poor formatting and the like, and I can't stand wimpy, whiny, Mary-Sueish, or unrealistically stoic characters. Because of this, I'm fairly good at pointing these things out and I'll do my best to help you fix them.Other than that, I've a got a fair sense of background and description, and I've been told that I can make things very emotionally powerful when I want to (which isn't often. It takes a lot of energy). I'm also good at things that sway more towards the meditative side than the actiony one, and I do decent rants. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I don't really have a sense of 'character development'. I mean, I could probably help you out with some minor things, like a change of heart or a mild to moderate relationship, but if you're looking for a full-blown all-out life changing massively intensive character turnaround, I'm gonna be a little lost. Also, I sometimes have trouble with pacing, as you can see if you've read anything by me. Things tend to get mired down at the same speed for a long while when I write, but since most people don't seem to have as much as a problem with that as I do, it'll likely be fine. And to be honest, it really only becomes noticeable when things get really long, which I avoid. I might not be the best for a heavy romance story either. Again, I'm not terrible at it, and I can handle a moderate relationship, but I'm just haven't had a lot of experience with writing that sort of thing. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
My personal favorites are oneshots, drabbles, and fanfics that don't go past twenty-five chapters. My attention span just isn't that long, you know? BUT if it's something kinda light, or with real short chapters, I can be persuaded otherwise.I'm at my best when dealing with meditative writing, with a good deal of thought involved. Don't get me wrong, I love a good action piece (mostly because I can't write them, heh), but a lot of doing and not much thinking just isnt my forte. That doesn't mean that I can't deal with a few good fight scenes, though, I just don't like the action isn't nonstop. Other than that, I'll seriously read ANYTHING you want to throw at me, except what's mentioned in the "Not My Cup Of Tea" bit down there. Epics, crazy people, murders, heavy violence, insanity, slash, weirdness of all levels, whatever. Bring it on. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'd prefer not to deal with any heavy spiritual matter or extreme sexual content. I'm not talking like a little bit of religion, or a couple mentions of Jesus or something, but like full-on nothing-but-God mind-bending stuff, you know? And I draw the line at things that shouldn't even be under Mature. Call me a prude if you want, but I just don't want to read it. |
