Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well, first off, I'm fourteen. But don't run away just yet; I'm not some stupid teenager who cannot spell, nor do I wonder what the difference is between a full stop and a semibreve. The notion of chat speech eludes me, and I can't stand to see words and grammatical symbols abused in anyone's work. That's why I'm the perfect editor- I care strongly about getting every sentence correct, yet won't change much in terms of the actual prose. So, more about me. I was raised on books. Both my parents are avid readers, like myself. The first book I ever remember being read was 'The Hobbit' by JRR Tolkien, when I was about three or four. Throughout my entire life I've read hundreds of books, as are visible on my bookshelves entirely crammed full of them. (Not to mention the ones that litter the floor.) So, I've certainly read enough books to know how to spell, and where the commas should go in any given sentence, but it's also given me a love of writing, even though I'm not the most determined writer and procrastinate on my stories all the time. That said, I should be able to appreciate where another writer comes from and the difficulties they face when writing something. Really, the only expectations I hold for the people I beta are that the writing is legible and the plot is decent. I don't even care if the plot is completely overused. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strong points as a beta-reader would be grammar, and spelling. I rarely mess up with these, but with grammar it's more subjective and I mostly just follow my instincts. That's not to say it's a bad thing though, if it sounds correct, it either is, or isn't in such a way that it doesn't matter. :3I'm also good at offering critique. I like to see writers improve, so I'll tell you what I like about the story, what I think you should continue with, and also what you need to work on to improve, to try and help you for the future. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
When it comes to editing prose, I won't try to edit the actual sentences as I both respect that a work should remain it's creator's fully, and also I just cannot. I can't really say why.You may view this as a good thing, or not, depending on what you like in a beta. If a sentence sounds wrong, however, like if it makes no sense, I'll discuss it with you and offer my suggestions to change it. Basically, you should seek my help as a beta not if you just want someone to look through the actual sentences, but if you want no spelling or grammar mistakes. Also, I'm English, not American. I try not to change Americanisms, and as far as I'm aware never have, so I try to watch out for Americanisms I've never come across before. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I will only read fanfiction that I know the fandoms of. Luckily, I've read many books and will have read a lot of fantasy, so you need only ask me if I've read/watched/played the fandom you'd like me to beta for. My preferred genres are:Fantasy, first and foremost. I don't much care for sci-fi, however, even though people tend to group them in the same category. I can stand time-travel and things like that, but the whole in-space thing I dislike. Alternate dimensions are fine, so long as they don't interact with their originals. I also like horror, but I find that many horror stories just lack the qualities of a good story. When the writer tries to scare the reader is the point where I get bored with horrors. I don't get scared easily, and certainly not with books. What I like about horror is mostly the macabre side of things. I like blood, and gore, but also like stories to have a plot not entirely focused on these things. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I won't beta a fandom I don't know. Within the ones I do know, my preferences are not:Romance. I tend to dislike romances. A lot. I don't care for a story where the main point of it is two people getting together. That said, I actually do like romances if they're interesting, and the relationship isn't the entirety of it. I like yaoi a LOT more than straight relationships, mostly because they tend to have better plots. So, I will beta romances but not if it's the main genre, unless it's yaoi. I won't beta yuri. As I said before, I don't care for space sci-fi, and things where different dimensions interact with each other. I also don't care for angst unless it's macabre. I don't like characters whining about how they'd like to cut themselves, for example, but I might like it if they were anti-heros and wanted to kill everyone else. :3 |
