Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I focus on character and plot build-up, consistency, and factual information. I expect a real plot, with a deep understanding of the characters
(even if it doesn't match my own view of them, if you have any proof about why you think they characters act or think in anyway then I will stick with your view). Stupidity for stupidities sake is deplorable in my book and I do not like reading or editing stories that revolve around such actions. Parodies are fine, because they are supposed to be over the top, but that sort of humour in a real story is distracting, inconsistent, and usually a waste of my time.I can and do research aspects of the story and details. Even if the story takes place in a completely Alternate Universe I will make sure that basic facts, characteristics, and origins are correct. The key to a great story is sympathizing with the characters, and that is impossible if what they are feeling/seeing/doing is impossible or completely out of context. I am a quick reader and like to jump into things head-first. So if you send me your Rough Draft I will try and get it back to you as quick as I can, usually no later than a week after you have sent it to me. I know I sound harsh and analytical here, but I'm not actually that bad to work with. I just don't want to waste my time cleaning up childrens stories with child level mistakes. If you don't know English, that is a different story and I would be more than glad to help you better it or edit it, but if you are English speaking and just simply don't know how to spell, then you really shouldn't be on this site; much less writing on it. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Spelling, grammar, diction (seriously, I'm a walking thesaurus), facts, research, timely edits, psychology, history |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Interactions between characters are hard for me to judge sometimes because I have my own perceptions of the characters, I tend to spin off on different ideas from what the text says, I can be push-y and insistent, sometimes I will feel done with the edit and send it back only to later see that I missed things just because I was busy and/or lazy, I am a cynic and realist so romantic/fluffy stuff is not what I really do |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer intricate plots with immoral characters at the best--or at least some with conflicting morals. Science fiction, supernatural, tragic, or angst-y stories are great. Something that will develop the character(s) throughout it or show off a different side of them.I am knowledgeable in most cartoons, books, and movies. My main haunts though are Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!, Teen Titans, Avatar: the Last Airbender, Danny Phantom, El Tigre, the Labyrinth, Star Wars, the Phantom of the Opera, Peter Pan, Fairytales, Greek Mythology, almost any musical, Lord of the Rings, MirrorMask, anything Disney or Pixar, and Jane Austen. If you request something that I don't know I will politely inform you. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Romances, super silly stories with no real plot, and the like aren't really my favorite to edit--but I will if you think I'd be able to help. I'm not a big cross-over fan either, but I'll try if you think I fit what you're looking for. |
