Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a teacher and tutor who works with developing writers in middle and high school in the US. If you ask me to beta your fic, expect that I will treat you with courtesy and respect; however, I am a "tough grader" and I do sometimes nitpick. Let me know the level of detail you'd like. You're not likely to get a "everything looks great, there's nothing you can improve!" from me unless I really mean it. In other words, my goal is to help you grow as a writer. I do not give butt pats, so to speak. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a strong grasp of English grammar, syntax, structure and spelling. I do best with dialogue and descriptions. My greatest strengths are in characterization-if I know your fandom, I will tell you whether I have the characters spot-on or not. I am also honest about my failings; if I cannot beta your work for whatever reason, or if I don't feel I can handle it, I will let you know. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I might be a little slow getting back to people, especially on weeknights, when I tutor/grade papers. If you want your fic beta'd in less than a week, I am likely not your gal. I also have little patience for people who ask for a beta and ignore the advice entirely. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I will not beta most anime stories; while I like anime, I don't feel I'm a big enough fan of any to really know the characters and stories well enough to give an honest assessment. If you want me to beta an anime fic, and I know you already or you ask nicely and I'm not busy, I will, but I will do it STRICTLY for spelling/grammar/mechanics, NOT for characterization or plot. Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Prefer to avoid adult stories only because YMMV and YKINMKBYKIOK-your mileage may vary, meaning you might find docking HAWT AS HELL and I might find it cringeworthy, and I don't really like to criticize other people's ideas of hotness; and your kink is not my kink but your kink is ok: I am seriously squicked by some of the stuff out there and I'd rather avoid as much as possible falling prey to something like "LOL its jst romance lol" *SURPRISE BUTTSECKZ/MPREG!*. If I'm not betaing porn, these things are a lot less likely to occur. :) Plus if I am reading porn I am more concerned with sex than with proofreading! |
