Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I read with the overall aim to better any work, in any shape or form. I point out both the good and bad points of a story. I don't want to hurt people, and I don't enjoy it. I just tell the truth. Sometimes this can be critical, and sometimes it can be pleasant.
I want to help improve writing styles and point out flaws and help people overcome these, as they can then better their writing styles.
If you wish to acquire my services as a beta-reader, then be prepared to receive a lot of critical judgment from me regarding your mistakes. I don't sugarcoat anything, or play kiss-up, so if you have fragile feelings or hate having mistakes pointed out rather harshly, then I suggest finding someone else.
But if you've got nerves of steel or a heart of stone, then send in your requests. I'll read your work with the eyes of an eagle, and when needed, I'll give you insights as to what you can (or cannot) do to help improve your story and your writing. Oh, and my number one rule as a beta-reader: I don't take control of how a story should go. I'll help you, but I won't control you. At least, I'll try to. I can be very controlling and dominating when it comes to some areas. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
First of all, I'm fluent in English, so I'm excellent in ironing out a story's grammar. I'm critical in my analysis, but I also have a vivid imagination that can help me visualize what you're trying to portray. I've also got a knack for fight scenes and I frequently work on introspection and character and personality development, because these are usually plazed over in favour of fighting, ect. But this leaves a story bland, and I don't like that. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can sometimes be a little harsh in my comments, which often leads me to be misunderstood. So, if you've got fragile feelings, I suggest getting someone else, because I won't sugar-coat anything when I comment on your work. I'm also not good with romance, humour or tear-jerkers, so I keep them simple. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny, Gundam 00, MegaMan, Pokémon, Star Wars, Star Trek, ect. I like the stories I read to have some originality, and depth for characters, ect. that adds detail to a story. Also, ensure that your grammar is of an acceptable standard. Bad grammar is a crime. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
No over-powered characters. They detract from a story, and make me feel sick.
No sappy romance or emotional scenes, also because I need a sick bucket to read/watch them.
No humour. I. Don't Do. Funny.
No Yaoi. It's a crime. Mild Yuri is acceptable.
No unexplained crossovers. They don't work. Never have, never will.
I also don't do children's stuff. I'm far too old for it, and have been since I was five years-old. Stories must be T or above for me to read. |
