Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a very comprehensive reader. The first thing I look for is whether the story itself is interesting. This is fanfiction, after all, so melodrama it up if you feel like it. I check to see if the dialogue is compelling first, because a boring plot can work if the interactions between the characters are interesting. After that I look at the plot. I give extra points for creativity, but I don't really expect it. I also take a glance at spelling and grammar; if the grammar really detracts from the story I'll bring it up. And if it's just not readable, I won't read it.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm very well read, and I can tell a compelling story from a boring one. My biggest strength is that I can tell, without a doubt, if a story is funny or not. I also look at stories from outside the box. If I'm a fan of a certain ship, that's not going to stop me from looking at the bigger picture and realizing a story sucks. I'm also handy at spotting Mary Sues, having crafted a few myself in the past.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I sometimes grade too easy on OOCness in stories, especially if I'm not familiar with the character (but if the character happens to be a favorite of mine, god help you if you OOC him). I also am more concerned if the story is interesting rather than if it uses a lot of fancy metaphors and literary devices. I'm reading fanfiction, not Pynchon, so I'm really not going to look too highly on someone that's trying to craft a literary masterpiece through fanfiction. If I'm bored, you've failed, and in a way that's unfair.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm not particular, but I do prefer stories that go with established, or at least plausible, pairings, if there is any shipping involved. I don't want to read about your bizarre Snape/Hermione/Harry love triangle, because that's just goddam stupid. I'll buy a Zutara or Draco/Hermione ship, cause who knows?
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not interested in reading slash, unless the partnership is confirmed gay in the particular book/show/whatever you're writing about. And no crossovers.
