So far the body count is as follows: Elizabeth Weir from Stargate Atlantis (Captured, turned into a Replicator and then frozen in space).Daniel from Stargate SG-1 (Killed numerous times though to be fair he always comes back).Marcus Cole from Babylon 5 (Had his life drained from him to save Susan).Marian from Robin Hood BBC (Stabbed – you know the universe hates you when Maid Marian dies.)Billy from Battlestar Galactica (Shot).Adric from Doctor Who (Blown Up).Claudia from Primeval (Wiped out from the timeline).Morgana from Merlin. (Went evil).Padme from Stars Wars: I-III (Lost the will to live).Sirius Black from Harry Potter (Fell through a void).Robyn from The Tomorrow Series (Killed in a bomb explosion).Murtagh from Eragon (Captured and turned evil, though he does redeem himself – then disappears again).Neil from the Dead Poets Society (Committed suicide).Callum from Noughts and Crosses (Hanged). Sybil Crawley from Downton Abbey (Died in childbirth). I have now decided to deter from favouring characters in order to protect them. Oh and usually I’m a strictly Canon girl so most of these relationship preferences will be how the author/writers/directors wanted it. Stargate SG-1: Jack and Sam – I mean come on: After ten seasons of unresolved romantic tension and having their other halves getting repeatedly killed or broken up with, I think they deserve to be together. Besides they’re already together in various Alternate Universes anyway. (Proof of destiny right there). Daniel and Vala – Not as attached to them as Jack and Sam but I still think they’re great. Their bantering is so funny but an obvious cover for the true feelings underneath. Plus Daniel is cool enough to be on this list all by himself. Stargate Atlantis: John and Elizabeth – The first couple I passionately ‘shipped’ and will always have a special place in my heart. Honestly I don’t know what it is about these two, especially as there are more Sheyla fans out there but I love them to bits. Think about it: They survive a year cut off from Earth, fighting the most vicious creatures in the Galaxy that defeated the Ancients, holding their people together on personality alone, rediscovering the lost city of Atlantis and dealing with each other’s apparent deaths about once a week. Going through that together forms a relationship that is beyond any colleges, friends or lovers. There are countless moments throughout the first three seasons between the two of them but I won’t mention them all: if you want examples message me. Killing Elizabeth off was the worst move TPTB could make in my opinion, a waste of her (unused) potential and a result of my curse). All I’ll say (because I can go on about these two forever) is they balance each other: Military and Civilian. Academic and Soldier. He relaxes her and she gets him to open up. But at the same time they’re both really strong leaders with incredible will, intelligence and stubbornness. When you put that together well...Sparky! Carson and Laura – Well, after what Rodney had to go through for their first kiss... Babylon 5: Susan and Marcus – This couple is hard to think about without getting seriously emotional. Competing with Sparky for my favourite sci-fi couple. Everything about them: their banter, violent arguments, language lessons, his wall chart, waiting for the first ‘special time’ was so well done and beautifully tragic. He died for her and she had to spend the rest of her life living for him: although she never got over it. It was unbelievably cruel to end them that way, especially after Susan finally seemed to be opening up to Marcus but my curse strikes again. Susan might have tried to act tough and Marcus light hearted but ultimately they both hid the same burdens of pain under the masks, which is why they worked. My favourite parts of the (amazing) show were Marcus scenes. My second favourite parts were Susan scenes. Put them together and...well: maybe the TV could only take so much epicness. Delenn and John – Ruling the galaxy together, uniting races and defeating bad guys. The ultimate happy ending: what’s not to love? Battlestar Galactica: Roslin and Adama – The fact they managed to build a relationship in the wake of attempted genocide, while trying to keep the human race alive and she was fighting cancer is a miracle. The most incredible old couple EVER. (Though I wouldn’t want to be around for their arguments). Gilmore Girls: Luke and Lorelai – Where to start? There are very few people out there who dispute the fact that JavaJunkie belong together. EVERYONE can see their connection, fans and fictional characters alike. There are so many reasons they work but I won’t list them because it would go on forever. It wasn’t a planned relationship by the writers, it was just there. They didn’t force it into creation: it developed slowly (with lots of oh-so-cute-denial) but when they did get together...Well, just turn on any episode in the series and see if you can resist shipping them: I dare you. Jess and Rory – I know there’s more disputes about this couple and it took me longer to come around to it but now I’m almost as attached to Literati as I am to JJ. Yes, unlike Luke and Lorelai it was planned but once again it developed. Like their uncle/mum Jess and Rory were friends first and built a relationship on shared interests although there was a ton of chemistry in there too. There are heaps of arguments about Rory’s boyfriends but I’ll just list why I think they belong together because I have no interest of getting into a Rory-War: Like I said above, they shared the same interests; books, music, movies – there’s always something to talk about. Meaning when they grow old together and even their passion has simmered down they’ll never get tired of each other. At the same time, they widen each other horizons and are different enough to balance. He’s more spontaneous and adventurous so can shake Rory up while she’ll ground and steady him. He wrote a book for her! Maybe other boys gave her Birkin Bags or cars but this is Rory Gilmore; books are a part of her. Jess, basically saying: this book was written because of you – is the most meaningful gift she could get. He was giving his whole soul and journey to her in the form of something they both love. They’re like a mini Luke and Lorelai who (as stated in the show = Written in the Stars), a monosyllabic Danes/Mariano man and motor mouthed Gilmore Girl. It’s inescapable people. They bring out the best in each other: Rory inspired him to turn his life around from a troubled high school drop out to honourable author/publisher. Jess persuaded her to go back to Yale and live her dreams again. Their chance hasn’t happened yet. Compared to her other relationship which spanned years, they were only together for a few months. Maybe you could dismiss it as a high school fling but they keep coming back to each other. No matter whom Rory is with, Jess always turns up as some point. They’re issue is timing: in their first try they weren’t ready for the relationship and needed to break up and find themselves before trying again. But they both matured which kind of leads me onto the next point... He was the only one who didn’t get a second chance. She was with both Dean and Logan at least twice but only dated Jess once. Obviously their opportunity to be together is still out there. I know you, I know you better than anyone.” (Direct Quote). She didn’t even try and argue! He clearly affected her more deeply than anyone else: after they broke up she didn’t date for a whole year (which is the longest Rory’s ever been single on the show). She was scared to give him that second chance because of how sacred their relationship was: it was too valuable to waste again and she was waiting for the right time. Amy herself even said that they developed Jess and Rory to be soul mates, ‘meeting of the minds’. Lane and Dave – Yes Zach’s ok but Dave was way better. Their whole subterfuge in hiding the relationship from Mrs Kim was hysterical and proof of how much Dave loved Lane. Damn the O.C and reality interfering with fictional life... Merlin: I’m seriously unsure about this one: while I have nothing against Merlin/Freya and Arthur/Gwen, will contently ship them but there’s just something about Merlin/Arthur that make you wonder...But maybe they’re better as friends. Pirates of the Caribbean: Will and Elizabeth – Poor guy rich girl pirates. Sometimes no arguments are needed. Disney Channel: Troy and Gabriella (HSM) – Ok this one is really embarrassing but yes, I was a huge fan when I was younger. Disney Movies: Kiara and Kovu (TLK2) – Also one from when I was younger but it’s actually pretty deep. When you look at their story, they’re basically the lion version of Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending. Beauty and the Beast (B&B) – Because the characters actually have depth and development. As a tomboy kid the whole ‘love someone on the inside’ was more interesting than ‘Ooh, Prince Charming’. Plus Belle is a socially awkward bookworm so I love her automatically. Aladdin and Jasmine (A) – Something about a magical carpet ride stands out from other first dates. Star Wars: Han and Leia – Because ‘I Love You – I Know’ is the most romantic line ever. Finn and Poe - Is any explanation needed here? Peter Pan: Peter and Wendy – Yet another childhood pairing. Am I the only one who thinks Wendy is crazy for abandoning Never Never Land and Peter to become a young lady? Titanic: Jack and Rose (obviously) – It’s probably the only proper ‘romance’ I’ve ever seen. His Dark Materials: Will and Lyra – Even more tragic than Marcus/Susan. I mean at least most couples are united in death. Because of Pullman’s theology those two are trapped in separate worlds forever with no hope of seeing each other again. It’s so unfair because they go through so much and no one else will be able to understand them. Maybe the tragedy adds depth but I was in depressed denial for weeks after finishing the book. Noughts and Crosses: Callum and Sephy – Another tragic pair and Romeo/Juliet case. Minus the happy ending. Inheritance Cycle: Anyone EXCEPTAyra and Eragon – An epic romance? Really? He spends four books trailing after her for no other reason than her ‘beauty’ (lust methinks) and her bitter ice queen facade (how is that attractive?). Nasuada and Murtagh – In the horror that was Book 4 these two were the only bright spot. (Though I was a fan of them from the beginning). Trapped on opposite sides of the war, Murtagh forced into slavery, Nasuada being tortured by his master, only for her to convince him to fight back at the crucial moment because of love. That Chris is an epic romance. I mean ‘You know why’ is almost as good as ‘I know’. Harry Potter: Harry and Ginny – We should see more of these two. All I can say is Harry (epic character that he is) needs someone who can understand how his life has been damaged by Voldermort. Ginny because of the Chamber of Secrets empathises with that. Not to mention she’s an amazing Quidditch player, accomplished dueller and a red head which is pretty much Harry’s ideal list. Ron and Hermione – Seven books of non-stop quibbling turned to romance. Enough said. Luna and Neville – I just like the idea that all six of the main ‘gang’ pairing up. Plus both of them are apparent outcasts with incredible personalities. Lord of the Rings: Faramir and Eowyn – So much more than a ‘pair the spares’ relationship. Their scenes in the ‘The Steward and The King’ chapter are beautifully written and both are my favourite characters. Eowyn so strong and warrior-like (“I am no man!” – best line ever) and Faramir also strong (he resisted the Ring for crying out loud!) but gentle at the same time. Aragon and Arwen – I’m not as attached to them as I am to the pair above but their romance is pretty incredible as well. Giving up immortality...and of course the repeating history with Beren/Luthien. The Hunger Games: Katniss and Peeta - Say what you like but with the amount they went through together I just don't think it would work with anyone else. Not to mention they (tried) to sacrifice themselves for each other multiple times. Percy Jackon: Percy and Annabeth - Does anyone out there NOT support them? Frank and Hazel - Can these two get more adorable? They were both so sweet in SoN, and obviously meant for each other. I love their friendship, the way they build each other up, their support for each other, defending each other from the fellow Romans...Gah. I just love them ok? Leo and Piper - Honestly I loathe Jason/Piper. Partly because Jason is a really flat, overly-perfect character. (Come on Rick, you can do better than that!). But also because their relationship is only based on appearances and fake memories. Leo and Piper on the other hand, established a friendship before they even met Jason and have the funniest snark-banter ever, rather than staring-into-each-others-eyes sessions. In my head Canon, all of Piper's memories of getting together with Jason were actually about Leo, and Rick has been using 'Jasper' as a total red herring for us fans. But thats just me. Nico and Will - Forever impressed that Rick gave us barely three chapters will those two and they've become one of the Percy Jackson flagships. It was a nice reminder after the inorganic romance of Jason/Piper that Rick is hella good at drowning you in feels. Robin Hood: Robin and Marian – In pretty much any version of Robin Hood I’ve read/ watched these two are great. Mainly because Marian is usually kick-arse but the whole concept of an outlaw in love with a noble woman and the two trying to save the world together is one that sticks. My favourite version would probably be the ‘Outlaws of Sherwood’ F.R.I.E.N.D.S: Monica/Chandler = OTP to end all OTPs to be honest. (Check out the number of fics about them for evidence.) There's not enough space on this space to rant on about how they're one of the best friends to lovers stories I've ever seen and the beautiful rarity in that they were a couple who were allowed to get together and stay together with no artificial angst, roadblocks or break ups to make "good TV." I loved that any conflict came from external forces (Chandler having to move away, their infertility) rather than drama between the two of them. I love that they just got on with being awesome together, and grew together and learnt together and worked through their personal and shared baggage and shared their insecurities and supported each other and encouraged each other and ultimate made each other better people. I love how realistic their relationship was: That there wasn't great melodrama or huge realizations, they were just friends who realized they wanted to hang out together for the rest of their lives because it made them happy. They were hilarious and adorable and relatable as two awkward, neurotic dorks who understood the other's insecurities and that in the end was all they needed. X-X |
