Normally when Shawn wanted to "borrow" Henry's tools, he just took them without permission, not returning them until Henry had badgered him for days on end. This time, however, Shawn asked politely to borrow his toolbox and Henry was so stunned he didn't even think to ask what he needed them for. And while he was shocked when Shawn returned them the next day – a complete set and in the same condition they were in before – he managed to ask what he was working on. Just fixing up a few things at Juliet's, he had explained with a shrug and then promptly took off with Henry's last muffin.
Henry had come to expect his son's antics during briefings, so when Shawn didn't so much as bat an eyelash at what would have been the perfect opening to make a joke at Lassiter's expense, he took notice. Actually, everyone took notice. When Shawn realized everyone had stopped talking he looked up from the case file he had been concentrating on. Are you feeling alright, Mr. Spencer? Shawn shrugged that he was fine and that the butler did it. And after Lassiter and Juliet spent the day investigating, they came to the same conclusion; the butler did indeed do it.
It was supposed to be a quick stop at the station to pick up his fishing hat from his desk. But the detective in him, and father for that matter, needed to know why his son was sitting in Chief Vick's office when he knew there weren't any active cases. Buzz informed him that the chief agreed to let Shawn go through cold case files over the weekend and for every one he solved he'd get half of Psych's usual fee. Henry mused it must've been quite the case he solved based on her shocked expression. Buzz shook his head in response. That was only one of twenty-five. Doing a quick calculation in his head, Henry whistled. He knew that Psych was doing well, especially with Gus in charge of the finances, so Shawn couldn't be too hard up for money. He could only imagine what Shawn's plans were for his sudden windfall. Life size Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots was the first thing that came to his mind.
He spotted Juliet at her desk alone, which was rare these days, and he decided to see if he could casually get any information out of her about the recent changes in Shawn's behavior. She hadn't heard him approach so he took that opportunity to observe her. Dark circles under her eyes, Tums on her desk and a certain glow that he had seen once before on Madeleine. He gave Juliet a quick nod and continued walking past her desk, slightly in shock that he was going to be a grandfather.
Henry sat at his kitchen table contemplating what he had discovered. His son was going to be a father. Shawn Spencer, responsible for another human being's life. The sound of the door opening brought him out of his thoughts and he caught his son's eye as he entered the house. In that moment a look passed between them; they both knew. A silent minute passed until Shawn sat at the table. I don't want to screw this up. Henry said the fact he cared enough about screwing things up told him Shawn would be just fine. Kids are hard and you can't run when things get tough, but if you work at it, you might get as lucky as I did.
