Summary: Before he could snap the Death Stick in two and leave the Resurrection Stone behind, Harry finds himself in a precarious situation- employed as Deaths' Servant. It doesn't help when Ryuk drops the Death Note into the Human Realm and Harry is sent to deal with the trouble caused by the Shinigamis' boredom.
Pairing: Most-likely LxHarry
Warnings: Profanity, Alternate Universe, Cussing, Maiming, Death, Spirits, possible snarkyness along with possible yaoi.
I don't own DN or Harry Potter- so there!
P.S.: Sorry it's been forever guys! I had the first part of this all typed out, it was the second half giving me trouble, but here it is! I already updated Blood Stained Jester (that whole chapter was written from scratch), but I felt like writing more so here's this. If it wasn't 2:00 AM over here I'd be writing up the next chapter for World on Fire or A Dreaded Time, but I'm tired as it is so maybe I'll have something else posted tomorrow. I hope this chapter doesn't move to fast!
Thanks for sticking around everyone!

Chapter 8- Insanity
L blinked at the screen of his laptop, absently adjusting the angle of the screen (a small part of his mind calculating the new angle) even as he listened to the annoying ring that signaled that the person on the other end of the line had yet to pick up.
Upon hearing the mechanical voice denoting the voicemail messaging system, L found himself ending the call slightly annoyed before reaching for a gummy bear and then proceeding to savagely bite the poor inanimate animals' head off.
Attempting to return to his work, L refocused his eyes on the blindingly bright screen. Pausing for a moment, L reflected that perhaps he needed a couple of hours rest. After weighing the pros and cons of such an action, L discarded the thought carelessly before attempting to return to the file that filled his computer screen.
The case contained within the file was one he had asked for personally, yet L soon found himself staring at the text blindly for several moments. The words, despite their usually interesting content seemed to hold little of his focus and slowly blurred into meaningless black type.
It took ten minutes before L found that his thoughts had wandered much like his focus and upon coming to this realization found that his gaze had turned from the screen of his laptop to his cell phone, now located on the opposite end of his desk where he'd tossed it after the failed call.
Agitated at the betrayal of both his mind and his eyes, L retrieved the phone from its position before tossing it harshly across the room where it landed somewhere among the mass of comforter located atop the unused hotel bed.
Partially satisfied with his vengeance, L returned his gaze to his laptop after a moment of wriggling in the desk chair he crouched on in an attempt to find a more comfortable position.
After a few moments he blinked and with a barely audible sigh gave the whole thing up as a bad job. Using his hand to push away from the desk he allowed the office chair to propel him half-way across the room in his boredom.
This continued for about a half an hour, with L using all manner of objects to push himself to and fro across the room lazily, until even that minute amount of amusement died.
He vacated the chair quickly, practically pouncing atop the bed to search for his discarded cell phone, barely refraining from grumbling under his breath at the same time.
Mentally cackling as he located the device, L snapped the phone open and stared at the screen.
Giving the equivalent of a curse (roughly flicking his empty left hand), he aggravatedly began typing in a phone number.
Harry picked up on the third ring.
"L, this is not the time! Oi, watch were you're-"
The man/spirit/thing sounded out of breath (did he even respire? He was dead after-all, was it necessary, and if not why bother with the human theatrics) as well as slightly annoyed.
L flinched slightly as he heard a loud clash from the other end of the connection.
"No Beyond don't!... Oh great, look at what you did!"
"But Harry!" Whining. Beyond was whining?
"No! That-uggh!"
"Harry?" L questioned confusedly.
"Sorry L, I'm gunna have ta call ya back, ciao!"
L blinked perplexedly at his phone after hearing the distant sound of a dial tone.
"Great. Look at what you did. We are so going to get kicked out of this hotel."
Beyond, scuffed his shoe on the carpet, eyes on the floor guiltily as Harry briefly reprimanded him, before turning his gaze up to meet Harry's eyes.
"No. Nope. Nuh-uh. No puppy-dog eyes. They won't work. I swear it, they won't. Nope." Harry kept eye contact with Beyond for thirty seconds before, as Beyond predicted, his shoulders slumped in defeat and he reached out to ruffle Beyond's hair.
"Well…" Harry turned his gaze to the hallway they stood in the middle of, wincing slightly as he took in the amount of damage that had occurred, "I guess it could have been worse…"
A low groan interrupted Harry, and both the former wizard and his charge turned to stare at the form slumped against the wall behind them.
Harry scowled at the woman even as Beyond felt a slightly evil grin flitter across his mouth.
"Oh yes, let's just give all the damn Shinigami fucking Death Note's that they can drop at their leisure, and I know! Let's also make sure that we don't punish them for dropping the Notes, after-all it's not like it's our problem! Noooooo let's let someone else clean up our messes, after-all, Death and his reapers do it all the time!" Harry gave a wordless snarl even as he crouched down beside the woman who was slumped unconscious against the wall, he picked up her purse and started to rummage through it growing frustrated when he couldn't find what he was looking for.
Beyond was already one-step ahead of his father, having sat himself next to the woman as he began going through her coat. With a grin he produced his prize triumphantly, waving it in Harry's face to emphasize his success.
Harry huffed at him, grinning as both spirit and child stood. Beyond took a moment to admire the torn wallpaper, broken furniture, shattered glass, and ripped up carpet that now made up one of the hotels hallways.
"Beyond, we have to go, security will be here in about two minutes."
Making a noise of agreement, Beyond jumped up to latch himself onto his guardian's back as Death's Servant took off at a run, skidding down winding hallways until he reached the stairs down to the lobby, at which point, Harry grunted a warning to the monkey clinging to his neck before he swung himself over the banister.
Beyond tightened his knees around the spirits waist as they plummeted from the hotel's 57th floor towards the ground floor, cringing at the knowledge that if Harry wasn't Death's Servant, they would both be as good as dead.
Harry, reached out at about the last second gripping the banister of one of the lower floors, forcing his magic to slow them as well as cover the surface of his hand even as he shifted all of the momentum of their fall sideways, launching to the right and open ground and Harry forced his body into a roll, one hand moving to protect Beyond's skull. They were on the ground floor, and though Harry was shaking the arm he had used to catch the banister out and wincing, they both were unscathed.
"I know I told you I could do that, and I practiced, but remind me not to do it from so far up when you're with me."
Woozily, Beyond nodded as he buried his face into Harry's neck, "can we go? I'm…not feeling so good…"
Shaking himself, Harry nodded, giving Beyond enough time to settle his stomach before the boy climbed down and reached out to grab his hand.
Harry opened the door to the lobby and they both calmly began to move towards the exit. They were stopped briefly by an attendant, causing Beyond to hide shyly behind Harry's leg as the former wizard began chatting with the stranger, after an exchange of niceties, the wizard and his adopted son managed to exit the hotel and get on one of the hotel shuttles heading towards the airport.
"You've still got it right Beyond?" Harry asked as they seated themselves in the back of the bus which slowly began pulling away from the hotel.
The ebony haired child nodded seriously, settling himself against the back of the seat to conceal the Death Note that was tucked in the back waistband of his jeans.
Harry smiled.
"Great, now all we need to do is make it through customs and call your nosey father."
Beyond pulled a face.
"He's not my father, and even if you two got together-" Harry choked, and Beyond continued talking over the resulting coughing fit, "which I wouldn't be surprised if you did, I still wouldn't call him that! He's, he's too much like an older sibling or something, and it'd just be weird."
"You-you think-" Beyond raised an eyebrow at his adopted Dad.
"You stare out the phone for minutes when I mention him, you grumble about him constantly and you flirt with him while you guys are on the phone. I may be a child, but I do know what all those things add up to."
"I'm not- He's- Were not-" Harry spluttered.
Beyond sighed and rolled his eyes.
"When we meet up I am so forcing you two out on a date. Socially awkward older brother figure thing or not. And you, dear father mine," Beyond stated, reaching out to poke Harry viciously in the side, "are not going to get out of it."
Smugly, Beyond brought his knees up to his chest and rested his chin on them, humming tunelessly as Harry gazed incredulously at him.
