AN: Ohmigawd. I just finished Catching Fire. I so cried. For hours. And then I resorted to listening to music. Has anyone noticed how a lot of Mayday Parade songs go awesomely with the books? I have. And so this little bit of a piece came into my head, and I have to write it. It takes place where CF let off. Just a little Katniss/Gale moment. On with the oneshot. It's in Katniss's POV.

Let go

A Hunger Games songfic for "I'd Hate To Be You When People Find Out What This Song Is About" by Mayday Parade (dude, they have long names for their songs)

And we both go, down together
We'd stay there forever
Just try to get up

I couldn't move.

And I'm sorry, this wasn't easy
When I asked you believed me, and never let go

"No."

Well I'm thinking of the worst things, that I could say to you
But a promise doesn't mean a thing, anymore

"Katniss, I'm sorry. I swear, we'll-"

And this never will be right with me
And now you're trying desperately
But I'm, tongue-tied and terrified of what I'll say

"No. We won't. It…it's…"

And then we both go, down together
We may stay there forever
I'll just try to get up

"It's not too late. You know that."

And I'm sorry, this wasn't easy
When I asked you believed me, you never let go
But I let go

"You don't get it. It's been over. Since the first time. I had to let go of everyone, because I knew it was over. But you had to try to imagine a world where I could live, because you didn't know the reality of it all!"

I could only sing you sad songs
And you could sing along
And you could see the melody, that's been calling out your wrongs

Tears rolled down. Somewhere, my mockingjay pin was still haunting me. I'd started it all. It was my fault.

This never will be right with me
And now you're trying desperately
But I'm, tongue-tied and terrified of what I'll say

"You think you're the only one who had to deal with that! Katniss, we all had to let go! Your mother and Prim, they were a wreck. All of district twelve was in panic. And where did it get them? Yeah, a bomb to kill them all. You think you were the only one who had to let go of something? We all knew it was the end, and none of us could keep believing in you anymore! And I…I…"

But I never told you everything
I'm losing hope and faded dreams
And every single memory, along the way

"And what, Gale? You know it all? You think that I somehow had it better in that arena? I can't remember a time when I've had it better than you, than anyone."

And then we both go, down together
We may stay there forever
Just try to get up

"No, Catnip. But you didn't have it worst."

And I'm sorry, this wasn't easy
When I asked you believed me, you never let go
But I let go

Tears drip through thick eyelashes. The ones Cinna had made sure came out perfect. He was gone now. I had to live with it. Who had followed him?

And we both go, down together
And stay there forever
Just try to get up

"So it's bad on everyone. But we're here now."

And then we both go down together
We may stay there forever
Just try to get up

And I'm sorry, this wasn't easy
When I asked you believed me, you never let go
But I let go...

"Not for long."

Gale kisses me. It doesn't last long. Because then we have to face death. Then we have to make it through. Even if it means letting go of the other.

AN: Yup. That's it. It might seem kind of confusing. I wrote it in a few minutes. And I had to replay the song on my iPod about thirty thousand times. If you haven't heard that song, then you should. Like, now. Mayday Parade is beyond awesome. So go listen. Now. It makes a lot more sense with the fic, too. Peace!
