Chapter 23: Breakfast Over Easy

Breakfast was a small affair with Lizzie cooking for everyone but Jane. Jane was still stuck on the phone with their mother, going over wedding details. Her voice went in and out as the conversation continued.

"Now, I feel really bad," Lizzie moaned. "I hope this won't derail everything."

"What do you mean?" asks Charlie.

Well, my mother has very particular opinions. She's certainly giving Jane an earful. I just hope she won't change any of the plans we're already made."

"Do you think I should go find her?"

Lizzie thinks for a moment. "That might work. Tell her breakfast is getting cold."

Charlie leaves the room like a man on a mission.

Georgie glances at him, "Will that work?"

Lizzie shrugs, "There's a 50-50 shot. But it couldn't be anything related to the wedding or else that would set my mother off again. Fingers crossed." Lizzie crosses her fingers Parent Trap style. Georgie gives her a strange look.

"Seriously?" Lizzie complains as she shakes her head. "Have you never seen that movie? Kids these days…" she mutters.

"What are you talking about?"

"Nothing. Nothing, not a thing. Just a movie I adore. It's ancient. You'd probably hate it."

Georgie narrows her eyes. "You're just saying that aren't you."

"Maybe." Lizzie sticks out her tongue.

Will laughs. "The two of you are quite the pair."

Both Lizzie and Georgie beam at him.

Ah man, he thinks. It's going to be terrible when they gang up on me. Then he blinks and realizes that he just thought of having Lizzie in his life long-term. He starts shoveling his breakfast in his mouth before he can say something stupid. Georgie gives him a knowing look, but thankfully doesn't say anything.

The three of them eat in silence. A moment later, Charlie comes back into the kitchen with Jane.

"You made it," Lizzie says, "Sorry," she winces at Jane. "Clearly I wasn't thinking properly."

"Seriously." Jane says.

Lizzie jumps up and grabs her breakfast plate. She whips off the aluminum foil and hands it to her sister.

Jane smiles gratefully at her.

"What I want to know is how she even knew about the engagement." Lizzie wonders aloud.

"I can answer that," Jane says with a frown. She pulls out her phone and hands it over to her sister.

Lizzie starts reading. "She didn't!"

"I can't believe she did that!"

Lizzie reads on, horror crosses her face. She puts the phone down on the table. "How could she? She's lucky she left yesterday because I would give a piece of my mind. Several pieces in fact."

Jane sighs and picks up her fork. "Lucky for her indeed. Because I would almost let you."

Lizzie sinks backwards. This is too much. Caroline crossed a line. Nobody messed with her sister and lived to tell the tale. Just ask Christina.
