Justine stood at Jordan's hospital bed holding his hand. It seemed like it was just yesterday that the twins had been born but now, Olivia realized that her little boy was about to die. It wasn't fair.

"Come on Jordan," Justine begged, "come back to us."

Jordan moved his hand and moaned.

"Mom," Justine exclaimed, "I think he's waking up."
Olivia looked at Stan.

"Is that possible," she asked him."

Stan looked into Jordan's eyes. His pupils were no longer fixed and dilated. Now they were moving.

"Jordan," Stan said gently, "Can you follow my finger with your eyes?"
Jordan was able to do that.

"Squeeze my hand Jor," Justine implored.
Jordan squeezed Justine's hand tight.
Olivia remembered that day 13½ years ago when Justine and Jordan were born.

When Justine and Jordan were born Olivia didn't even know that she was pregnant. She had no signs of pregnancy and never missed a period. On December 3rd she woke up with mild pain in her back. She groaned. She assumed her period was coming on. Olivia got up and got ready for her day. She had a full caseload today.

After work she met Grace for lunch. They would meet once a week every week since they were in 3rd grade. By now Olivia's back pain had grown stronger.

"Olivia," Grace asked, "Are you alright?"

"I thought so," Olivia said, "I'm not so sure now. I have strong back pain and I think I just peed myself."

"Come on," Grace said, "We're going to the hospital. Something tells me that there's something wrong."

Olivia didn't argue with Grace. Grace called Stan and had him wait outside of the hospital. He was right outside when Grace pulled in. By now Olivia's back pain had spread to her stomach. After several hours of testing the doctor came in.

"How are we feeling," the doctor asked.

"I don't know how 'we're' feeling but I feel terrible and frightened. I have no idea what's wrong with me," Olivia exclaimed.

"It's okay," the doctor said, "You're pregnant. Actually you're fully dilated. Those babies are coming now."

"BABIES? I'm PREGNANT? Are the babies okay?"

"All the tests look good," the doctor said, "Now I need you to start pushing on the count of three. One, two, three."

Olivia pushed with all her might for forty-five minutes.

"I see a head," the doctor told her, "One more push and the first baby is out."

Justine came into the world at 1:34 AM. She weighed 5 ½ pounds. Jordan however was not in a hurry to get out of the womb. He wasn't born until 3:28 AM. He weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces. He was born screaming off a lung.

"Jordan," Justine asked, "If you're awake blink once."

Jordan blinked once.

"Okay," Stan said, "I'm going to turn off the ventilator and see if he can breath on his own."

It took a minute but Jordan's breathing became more relaxed.

"Let's get the respirator out," Stan said, "Okay buddy. I need you to cough when I take the respirator out. It's not going to hurt. You're on morphine so it won't hurt at all."

Stan pulled out the respirator and Jordan coughed. There was no pain but a lot of gagging.

"Jordan," Justine asked, "Can you talk?"

"I think so," Jordan said horsley

"Thank GOD," Justine said, "Dad can I hug Jordan."

"Carefully honey," Stan said.
Justine was careful when she hugged Jordan. The family was complete again.
