It was a normal day at Grey Sloan Memorial until a certain patient arrived.
The ambulance pulled up and as the doors opened, the doctors prepared themselves.
"Forty-six year old male. Car crash. He had no ID on him," one of the paramedics said as the doctors unloaded the patient. The patient had glass all in his face and over his body and he was covered in blood. He had a large piece of glass sticking out of his chest as well.
"Is that the windshield?" Jo Karev asked with wide eyes.
"It's part of the windshield," Meredith Grey said dryly and gave Dr. Karev a look.
The doctors brought the patient in and into an exam room and started to assess him. He could barely keep his eyes open and it was clear he kept losing consciousness. All the doctors carefully worked on taking the small pieces of glass out. Dr. Lincoln was in charge of holding the windshield in place while they worked on him.
The patient opened his eyes and tried to say something but Meredith stopped him. He even tried to sit up this time.
"Sir, I'm going to need you to stop moving," she told him as she worked on getting some glass out. He tried to get up again.
"Sir," Meredith said with more force.
The patient removed his oxygen mask with one hand and reached for Meredith's arm with the other. She gave him a look but he said,
"My daughter."
Meredith looked around at the other doctors and then said,
"I'm sure she's fine. You need to lay down though and stop moving."
"Oh god, she didn't come in with me, did she?" the patient asked.
The looked Meredith gave him was enough.
"What's your name?" Meredith asked him.
"Carson...Carson Callahan," the man said.
"What's your daughter's name?" Meredith asked.
"Scarlett. She was in he car with me when-"
Suddenly, Carson stopped talking and he had trouble breathing. Then the monitors started going off and his BP started going down.
"We're losing him," Maggie Pierce, head of Cardio, yelled.
Jo, who was recently married to Alex Karev, instantly started working on getting an airway and once he was intubated, Meredith yelled,
"Book an OR," as she started to get ready to transport the patient.
The doctors were able to transport the patient to the OR and Meredith got to work alongside her sister, Maggie, and Jo. They were able to remove the piece of windshield successfully and Carson was placed in recovery later that afternoon.
"Any word on the missing daughter?" Meredith asked Maggie later on while they were helping out in the pit.
"What missing daughter?" Amelia Shepherd asked as she approached her "sisters." She just got out of a surgery and had some free time so she wondered down to the pit to see if she could help.
"We had a trauma patient this morning who couldn't find his daughter," Maggie told her.
"He was in a car accident and claimed she was with him, but he came in alone," Meredith added.
"Rough," Amelia said.
As she said that, Teddy Altman walked by with a chart. Maggie noticed the way Amelia looked at her and asked,
"How are you doing?"
Amelia instantly perked up and said,
"I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
"Because your two foster children were taken away from you and the man you were with got another woman pregnant," Maggie stated.
"Betty and Leo were not taken from me. Betty went back with her parents and Leo is with Owen," Amelia said, ignoring the last part of what Maggie said.
Both Maggie and Meredith gave her a look.
"Teddy and Owen have a baby on the way. I don't want to get in the middle of it. They deserve to be happy together and I'm not a part of all that," Amelia added.
"So have you talked to Linc since your trip to New York?" Meredith asked changing the subject. Amelia gave her sister a look. Maggie was about to say something but someone caught her eye.
It was a teenage girl. She had dark brown hair that fell over her shoulders and piercing blue eyes similar to Amelia's. They had a hint of grey in them. She looked lost and she had a cut on her head. The clothes she was in were torn up and bloody as well.
"Mere," Maggie said as she stared at the girl.
Meredith turned around as well as Amelia. The girl looked around the ER and it was clear she was searching for someone specific. The three doctors walked over to the girl and Meredith said,
"Hi, is there something I can help you with?"
The girl looked Meredith up and down and said,
"I was in a car accident with my dad and I went to go find help but when I got back, he was gone. They said he came here," the girl said without looking any of the doctors in the eye. Amelia's eyes narrowed as she noticed that the girl's eyes kept shifting and she kept itching her arm.
"Are you Scarlett?" Meredith asked with a smile.
"Yeah," the girl said and finally looked up.
"Why don't we fix you up and then I can bring you to see your father,"
Meredith offered.
"Okay," Scarlett said quietly and let Meredith guide her to an open bed.
Amelia eyed the girl carefully. Scarlett looked so familiar to her but she couldn't put her finger on it. She was also showing many signs of withdrawal and that broke Amelia's heart because the girl was so young. All the signs pointed to an addict. Amelia had just had some experience with Betty so she knew she should at least talk to Scarlett.
"Should we call your mom?" Maggie asked.
Scarlett shook her head and said,
"She had cancer and died a couple years ago."
"Oh, I'm so sorry," Maggie said.
Scarlett just nodded silently.
Once they reached a bed, Scarlett sat down and Meredith started to work on stitching the girl up and cleaning her wounds. While Meredith was doing that, Maggie and her both got paged to Carson's room. Maggie and Meredith both looked at each other and Amelia recognized the look.
"I can take over here," she offered, letting the two go.
"Thank you," Meredith said and got up.
"What's going on? Is it my dad?" Scarlett asked quickly with a worried look. Amelia waved Maggie and Meredith along and turned to Scarlett and said,
"Dr. Grey and Dr. Pierce are two of the best surgeons I know and they will do everything they can to save your dad."
Scarlett looked terrified.
"It's just- he's all I have left, you know?"
Amelia nodded and gave the girl a smile. When she looked up into Scarlett's eyes she noticed her constricted pupils and asked,
"How old are you?"
Scarlett bit her lip and said,
"I'm fifteen, why?"
"Just wondering," Amelia said as she finished stitching the girl up.
Then she got out her flashlight and made Scarlett follow the light with her eyes. She seemed all clear and conscious so Amelia put her flashlight down. Scarlett noticed the way Amelia was looking at her and it started to make her uncomfortable so she asked,
"Can I go see my dad now?"
Amelia took one last look at the girl and then nodded and said,
"Yeah, I can show you to the waiting room."
Scarlett followed Amelia to the waiting room and they almost made it there without bumping into anyone. However, Dr. Webber stopped them in the halls and said to Amelia,
"I didn't know your niece was coming today."
Scarlett gave him a weird look and Amelia tried to laugh it off as she said,
"No. This is a patient's daughter."
Webber's eyes widened and he apologized and offered to show Scarlett to the waiting room.
"It's fine," Amelia said and started to walk away with Scarlett behind her.
"What's with him?" Scarlett asked.
"Eh, he's getting old," Amelia said casually which made Scarlett smile a little.
When they reached the waiting room there was a woman with blonde hair yelling at the lady at the front desk. The woman then noticed Scarlett and yelled,
"Scar, what the hell is going on?"
Scarlett sighed and Amelia turned to her and said discretely.
"I thought you said your mom died."
"She did, this is my step mother from hell."
The woman stomped over to them and said,
"What happened to your father?"
Scarlett was about to say something but Amelia spoke up and said,
"Carson and Scarlett were in a car accident and he's in surgery right now. I can get you an update as soon as I find out."
"This is all your fault," the woman said and looked at Scarlett with a disgusted look.
"How is this my fault?" Scarlett asked with a pained look on her face.
"He was bringing you to one of your stupid meetings. I told him we should've just sent you to rehab from the start," the woman said and got up in Scarlett's face. Scarlett bit her lip and her brow furrowed as she tried to back up.
"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to sit down," Amelia said with some force.
"No, I can handle it from here Dr..."
"Shepherd. I'm Dr. Shepherd and I'm asking you to back up and clam down before I have to call security," Amelia said confidently.
"Trust me, I'm not the one you need to worry about. I'd keep a close eye on this one. I'm surprised she hasn't tried to run off and look for drugs yet," the blonde said.
Scarlett turned around and sighed as she closed her eyes.
"She may look like a child, but she's-"
"I'm going to stop you there. Thank you for your concern but you really need to sit down and be quiet. I'll let you know when I get an update about your husband," Amelia said. Then she walked over so she was face to face with Scarlett. Scarlett had a single tear falling down her cheek and her bottom lip was quivering. She opened her eyes and they were all glassy with tears ready to fall.
"Can I get you a bottle of water or something?" Amelia asked.
Scarlett quickly shook her head and wiped away her tear but Amelia said,
"It's on me."
Scarlett then nodded and followed Amelia to the cafeteria.
After getting her some water, Amelia took a seat at a table and Scarlett sat across from her.
"So, your step mom is-"
"A total bitch?" Scarlett asked.
"I was gonna say kind of a hardass but yeah, Bitch works too," Amelia answered with a smile.
"Sam met my dad not even a year after my mom died and they got married seven months later," Scarlett told her.
"Do you have any siblings?" Amelia wanted to know.
"Sam has two older sons, but that's it. My parents couldn't have kids of their own, that's why they adopted me," Scarlett told her.
"Oh, you're adopted?" Amelia wanted to clarify.
"Yep, they got me straight outta the womb," Scarlett told her with a nod.
"A friend of mine just adopted a baby himself. Leo is almost a year old," Amelia told Scarlett.
"That's nice," the girl said and smiled a little. Then she took a sip of water and asked,
"Is my dad going to be okay?"
Amelia wanted to say yes, but she knew she couldn't lie and give the girl false hope. So she settled on saying,
"Honestly, I don't know. I'm not your father's doctor. But the doctors on his case are the best in their field."
Scarlett nodded and then let her head rest in her hands and she said,
"Sam was right."
Amelia's brow furrowed and she tiled her head.
"What are you talking about?" Amelia wondered.
"If my dad wasn't driving me to one of my meetings then we wouldn't be here and he wouldn't be dying," Scarlett told her as she looked up.
"Hey, what happened to your dad wasn't your fault. It was an accident," Amelia said quietly.
Scarlett just shook her head and took another sip of water.
"He was yelling at me for running away again. That's why he didn't see the truck that hit us," Scarlett further explained.
"Scarlett," Amelia said softly.
"The only reason I left was because..." Scarlett started to say but then she stopped.
"Was because of what?" Amelia asked.
"It's nothing," Scarlett said and quickly looked down.
"Were you trying to get drugs?" Amelia asked. She knew she was pushing it but she was curious.
"What? No I'm clean," Scarlett told her, even though it was a lie. Amelia gave her a look so Scarlett said,
"Fine, I ran away to get away from Sam and her boys and I went to live with one of my dealers for a bit."
Amelia gave her a sympathetic look.
"I was never really into drugs. I wasn't a big party person... then my mom died. And everything changed. It felt like time stopped and my world fell apart. I was helping my dad clean out some of her stuff and I found her pills. So, I took them to help me sleep and then one thing led to another and now I feel like I can't live without them," Scarlett explained.
"Who's idea was it to bring you to the meeting?" Amelia asked.
"My dad's. He found out I was high at his second wedding and while Sam wanted to send me away, my dad didn't. He wanted me to get help at home," Scarlett explained.
"I've been clean for a while but I still go to meetings," Amelia stated.
Scarlett looked confused. Amelia gave her a small smile before saying,
"I was a drug addict for most of my life. I lived for the high. But once I realized just how much control the drugs had over me and I knew I had to reclaim my life. After my fiancé died in bed next to me due to an overdose, I changed and I got clean."
"And now you're a doctor," Scarlett pointed out.
"I'm the chief of neuro," Amelia said proudly. Then she glanced up and saw Jo with a familiar look on her face.
"Dr. Shepherd," Jo said and Amelia knew the outcome of Carson's surgery was bad.
"We need you to look at something," Dr. Jo Karev said.
Amelia looked to Scarlett and then back to Jo and nodded.
"Let me just bring her back to the waiting room," Amelia said.
She dropped Scarlett off and then followed Jo to the OR where Carson was on the table.
"When we removed the windshield all his internal organs shifted and he bled out a bit. We shifted his organs back down but there was too much damage to his organs and his heart just gave out before we could do anything else," Meredith explained.
"Carson was strong. He fought for as long as he could for Scarlett," Jo stated.
"Wait, his name was Carson?" Amelia asked and walked over to uncover the mans face. Her heart stopped when she looked at him. She instantly recognized him.
Amelia walked back out to the waiting room with her sisters. When Scarlett saw Amelia she stood up as well as Sam.
"How's my dad?" she asked.
"Can we go see Carson?" Sam wanted to know.
Amelia looked to Maggie and it was breaking her heart that they didn't save Carson. Meredith decided to be the one to break the news to the family.
"Mrs. Callahan, we did everything we could, but there was too much internal damage and his heart couldn't handle it. I'm so sorry, but he didn't make it. Carson is dead," Meredith told Sam respectfully.
Sam had tears in her eyes and she thanked Dr. Grey and then turned to Scarlett who looked terrified.
"This is on you," she growled to Scarlett. The fifteen year old looked to her step mother and when she tried to say something, Sam slapped her across the face. The girl didn't even flinch but all three doctors jumped a little. Instantly, Amelia stepped in between the two to keep Sam from hitting Scarlett again.
"Why don't you sit down," Amelia offered. Sam shot Scarlett one more hateful look and then she sat down. Amelia quickly turned to look at Scarlett. The fifteen year old had her hand pressed to her face where her step mother hit her. She locked eyes with Amelia and then the older of the two abruptly stood up and excused herself. Meredith noticed the way Amelia looked at Scarlett and left to follow her.
Grey found Amelia down the hall in a supply closet.
"Amelia?" Meredith asked as she knocked on the door. She didn't wait for an answer. She walked in and Amelia was pacing back and forth.
"What's going on with you? It's like you've seen a ghost," Meredith pointed out.
"Webber asked if she was my niece," Amelia stated.
"Scarlett? So, you two look alike," Grey said.
"She has my eyes," Amelia said with a proud smile.
"She probably has her mother's eyes," Meredith said since she remembered Carson had dark brown eyes.
"Exactly," Amelia said.
Meredith gave her a funny look and asked,
"Are you saying you're her mother?"
When Amelia didn't smile back, Meredith knew she was serious.
"Amelia," Meredith said slowly.
"Meredith, I think Scarlett's my daughter," Amelia blurted out.
"Because she has the same eyes as you? And because Richard Webber said you looked alike?" Meredith asked.
"No, because Carson Callahan was the man who ended up adopting my baby fifteen years ago," Amelia stated and looked Grey straight in the eye leaving no room for jokes.
