A/N: So… I might just be sitting in physics 2 right now but… fanfiction man… not to mention I've got eight chapters to do this week and I've only got one of them done… *sigh* nineteen credit hours man… plus I'm trying to get a job… oh boy… got my fingers crossed for gamestop :) That'd be so much fun :3 Anywho I think that this is the last chapter of Huntress and a Devil's Nest, which is sad but this story is going to be one tiny part of a massive story that will likely take me years ^^; (it'll be just like my original works… taking a long ass time…)
Disclaimer: Right because the person typing fanfiction in class owns the might Devil May Cry
Mother and Child
All three felt the hairs on the back of their neck stand upright with the intensity of the presence, this was different than all the times before and they all knew it, somehow they knew that this time it wasn't just a threat, this time it was real and it was coming for all of them. Eva did a quick scope around the room, not that that ever made a difference, it never showed its face, it just wanted them to know that it was there.
"Mom…" Vergil whispered, looking up at her with wide, scared eyes. Dante was still scanning around the room, looking tense but just as scared as his brother. She suddenly knew how Sparda had felt in that moment when he knew, knew that he had to abandon his family to protect them. Her boys were her entire world, she was ready and willing to die for them, and if now was that time, so be it. Eva looked to the drawer and quickly yanked it open, shoving all the junk out of the way and pulling out the old box in the bottom. She'd held onto these, intending to give them to the boys at some point but now they needed to have them, to keep them safe.
"Dante. Vergil." She said softly, both looked at her, the severity of the situation evident by the tone of her voice. "Take these and go hide, Vergil this one's yours," he tilted his head as she slipped the gold chain around his neck, the demonic metal altering and shaping to fit his smaller body "And Dante this one's yours." The younger looked at the red gemstone with a sort of awe until Eva interrupted his reverie. "Now go. Hide."
"Mom…" Vergil looked between her and the half of the amulet that he was just given. "What about you…?" Dante looked up at this as well, staring in mute shock, which was rare for the more talkative of the twins.
"Go." she said sternly and they did, looking back only once before disappearing into the house. Eva herself stepped out into the hall, armed to the teeth and ready to spend every bullet she had.
-Huntress and a Devil's Nest-
"Vergil…" Dante whispered in the darkness, his brother turned to look at him, blue eyes alight in a way that no human's could be.
"Be quiet." The older twin hissed, he was just as worried about their mom as his brother was but he had to be the strong one. His brother needed him… there was a crash outside and both flinched, holding tighter onto one another. Vergil held tighter onto his twin's hand when he felt the mild tremor that shook through it.
"Shh…" he whispered and Dante's blue eyes disappeared as he closed them tightly. There was another crash, and then another. The snarls of the demons that finally broke past the wards were heard clearly by the twins in the closet. The sounds of gunfire followed shortly after and they knew those sounds, those were Eva's prized guns, sounding off at rapid speeds, the only thing that kept up were the cries of demons as the guns found their targets. Too soon though they heard the gunshots start to slow as their mother started to use bullets more sparingly. The house certainly had a lifetime supply but the huntress was pinned to one spot, there was no way that she could make a few feet from where she was standing, let alone to one of the many stashes scattered about the house and the one that she was using from now was nearly depleted.
It was in that moment that she saw a head of white and she froze, she didn't want to draw the demons attention to her son but neither did she want him to try and help her in this suicide mission. There was a deep rooted chuckle from the doorway to her right and the huntress spun around only to come face to face with three glowing orbs, floating, watching like some hellish imitation of eyes.
"So this is the pathetic whore that my former comrade chose to keep as a mate…" the eerie disembodied voice caused a shiver to run down Eva's spine. The attention of the orbs turned to the small body standing in the other doorway. "And the filthy halfbreed spawn…"
"Run Vergil…" the huntress whispered, she knew that her son could understand the mouthed words but he stood firm, his hands tightening on the hilt of Yamato and gave the slightest shake of his head. The voice gave a deep chuckle and Eva's mind conjured a man shaking his head in amusement.
"Brave little halfbreed… just like your father, but you'll die just as worthlessly as he did." The light from those orbs flashed just a little brighter and the demons, whom had remained still when the orbs appeared, leapt forward once more, attacking both mother and child. Vergil fought bravely, fiercely, the light in his eyes and the delight that he took in the blood that spilled over his hands wasn't human in the slightest but at the moment, Eva was thankful, for it was that devil blood that was keeping her son alive and fighting. Out of the corner of her eye, the huntress noticed those orbs glowing brighter and brighter, it's charging an attack, she realized with dread.
"VERGIL NO!" Eva screamed, not heeding the danger to herself, charged through the ranks of demons and wrapped her arms around the older of her boys. Everything was quiet for a moment. When the huntress opened her eyes Vergil was staring at her with wide eyes, and that was when the pain began to set in.
"How perfect… two abominations, one shot." Eva looked down to see a bright red spike sticking through her chest, her eyes followed it to where it had pierced Vergil as well. Those blue eyes were as big as dinner plates as he started choking, even his incredible healing not able to keep up with a powerful devil's shot in his chest. Mother and child fell to the floor together, the life pouring out of them onto the floor in large red pools. Eva put a hand on her son's cheek
"It's okay… it'll all be okay…" she whispered, there was that deep dark chuckle again before the orbs and demons vanished. The last thing Vergil saw that day was his mother, covered in blood both hers and others, smiling at him and stroking his cheek and her soft voice telling him.
"Never forget that I love you..."
A/N: Dat ending man… fear not my loyal followers, the story will continue with the twins, they will each have their own separate story as they go in different directions after this but it may be a bit before I start those, or I may jump to a different part of the timeline first, but either way, the boys' stories will be told, from this very moment on. And for those that question what's going on with Vergil, just remember, they don't quite know the extent of the boys' healing capacities at this moment in time so,
Till next time,
