Reviews for Per Ardua Ad Astra
Guest chapter 12 . 6/22
this was good fun. I preferred your NCIS version, it seemed more polished, but this was definitely good fun.

I do question that Harry hasn't really used any of his mojo beyond the point following the shadow thing, especially when they had all these wraith heading at them and he had had time to prepare a nice doozy of a storm, but its a small thing, and certainly not meaning i enjoyed this any less.

thanks for sharing

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand I'm caught up.

All in all, this is a brilliant piece of work. The militaristic element to the story is superb and Harry's inclusion as a member of the excursion has been brilliantly wrought into the fabric of the plot. The fact that he lost his magic is an extremely intriguing element and it does not bother me in the slightest; if I want my fill of magic, I will eagerly await more of the scenes with Hermione at the SGC, which are also a nice touch. In fact, I think that the lore and premise of Stargate is far more interesting than that of Harry Potter, so it makes me happy that you have primarily focused on that aspect of the fic.

The technical aspects of the story have not gone completely above my head on account of my reading experience, but even those parts that have done - mostly SOP for the various branches of the military - have been interesting to quickly research. Some might complain about that being a necessity, but it is a good thing, in my mind, as it means that you have not dumbed-down the jargon or the characters. I imagine that your background in the military has helped a lot with this, so well done on conveying it in a way that makes sense to us civvies.

On characters, I like the fact that Harry has grown because of his experiences in a meaningful and realistic fashion. He is not a stereotype, nor a cardboard cut-out. He has depth and nuance, which make me eager to learn more about his history in due time. It's also good that you have not had him jump straight into a relationship with Teyla; these things take time to develop betwixt adults, especially when one has suffered a loss as he did with Hetty. This may or may not be romantic, but I look forward to seeing Hermione's reaction to his current circumstances, even if he chooses not to tell her what he has gone through in the Middle-East.

In terms of pacing, I like that the story focuses on the mundane. In fact, that may be why I am enjoying it so much; it is not rushed, but is clearly built as a slow-burner, something that I am content with due to the quality of the writing.

Given that you are extremely busy (and boy, do I empathise with that), I understand the lack of priority you have placed on updating. I myself have had gaps of several years between updates on account of personal issues. However, as a piece of motivation, I will say that I am excited at the prospect of reading more. If and when you ever get the free time to continue, know that you have at least one reader here who is ready to jump straight back into the story.

As the Irish Rangers would say: Glaine ár gcroí, Neart ár ngéag, Agus beart de réir ár mbriathar.

The jargon is decidedly NOT putting me off in the slightest. This is absolutely brilliant so far. I took a peek at your profile and saw the note that suggests this is unfinished; I do hope that you will return to it soon, because I plan to be caught up in the very near future.

This is an amazing story and I can’t wait to read more of it! I hope that you are still writing this, I love it. The thought of the way you have changed things even if in small ways it’s amazing. I really like how you have been developing Harry and Talyas relationship it is amazing. Fast but still real feeling.
