This is dumb. I see why enough people told you they were going to stop reading that you felt the need to respond. You didn't even use it for anything important it was just to get the him to be adopted. She could have had a heart attack and the same thing in the story would have happened. Not even a full chapter and you've made it so that these characters have healed from it and that's dumb too. You should change the summary to misery porn or at least something better then what it is. Because as it is now there is no indication that your story jumps the shark as hard as it does from its current summary.
